The site: Similarweb Website Traffic Checker. Cost: Freemium. Useful for: marketing and search.

What it is

Similarweb is a digital market intelligence company. Its free Website Traffic Checker gives a public page for many websites, labelled as Similarweb estimated data. The amazon.com page, for example, shows total visits over the last three months, bounce rate, pages per visit, average visit duration, global, country and category rank, top countries, a gender and age split, and a list of similar sites.

Only the top three marketing channels are shown free. Downloads, the full channel breakdown and the complete keyword and referral lists are gated behind registration or paid plans. Similarweb also lists other free tools, such as Top Websites rankings and a keyword generator.

Use it for

  • Comparing the rough scale of competitors’ websites
  • Seeing which countries a rival’s traffic comes from
  • Finding similar sites you had not considered as competitors
  • Checking a partner’s or publisher’s claimed audience

The free pages are good for direction and scale: who is bigger, where their visitors come from, and how they find the site.

How to use it

  1. Go to similarweb.com and enter a domain in the Website Traffic Checker.
  2. Read total visits and the engagement figures: bounce rate, pages per visit and visit duration.
  3. Check the top countries and the demographics panel.
  4. Look at the top marketing channels to see whether traffic is mostly direct, search or social.
  5. Review the list of similar sites, then repeat the search for two or three of them.

Compare sites with each other rather than reading one site’s numbers alone. Estimates are more useful as relative signals than as exact counts.

Example

A marketer can enter two rival online jewellery shops and compare total visits, top countries and the leading traffic channels. If one gets most visits from organic social and the other from search, that points to where each has put its effort.

Watch out for

  • All figures are modelled estimates, not measured traffic.
  • Treat small differences as noise; the value is in large gaps and direction.
  • Free pages show only part of the data; fuller breakdowns need registration or a paid plan.

It works well alongside Google Trends, Internet Archive Wayback Machine and Meta Ad Library.
