McKinsey Insights: free reports and articles on strategy and industry
McKinsey publishes articles, reports, McKinsey Quarterly, podcasts and newsletters on strategy, industries and the economy, free to read online.

The site: McKinsey Insights. Cost: Free. Useful for: reading.
What it is
McKinsey & Company publishes a large body of research on its Insights pages, and the articles open directly without a paywall. Formats include articles, reports, surveys, interviews, explainers, a Chart of the Week, McKinsey Quarterly and its digital edition, The McKinsey Podcast and video.
Research arms such as the McKinsey Global Institute produce longer reports on the economy and the workforce. Practice pages, such as Strategy & Corporate Finance, gather articles, surveys, books, blog posts and podcasts in one place. Newsletters, including The Weekend Read and The CEO Shortlist, can be sent to your inbox.
Use it for
- Background on an industry before an interview or project
- Survey data on executive views, useful as context in a report
- Clear explainers on business terms and trends
- Examples of how a large consulting firm structures an argument
It is a good way to learn what senior executives are reading and talking about, which helps in interviews, client meetings and strategy work.
How to use it
- Go to mckinsey.com/featured-insights.
- Open the relevant industry or capability page, or use the site search for your topic.
- Start with explainers for the basics, then move to reports for depth.
- Check the date and method behind any survey figure you plan to use.
- Sign up for a newsletter if you want regular reading.
Read the exhibits closely. The charts often carry the core finding more clearly than the text around them. When you quote a McKinsey figure, cite the article title and date, and say whether it comes from a survey, a model or an estimate, so readers can judge it for themselves.
Example
A student preparing for a consulting interview on retail can read recent McKinsey articles and a consumer survey, noting the main themes and figures. It gives a quick, structured view of what people in the industry are discussing.
Watch out for
- McKinsey is a consulting firm, so its research also markets its services.
- Survey samples and methods vary, so read the notes before quoting numbers.
- Forecasts and estimates are scenarios, not facts.
It works well alongside HBR free articles, OECD Data and IMF DataMapper.
